GTA 6 weather: local downpours, wind and hurricanes
Weather in GTA 6 will vary from one area to another: you may see a downpour in the distance while standing in sunshine, then arrive after it ends to find wet streets and puddles. Rockstar has also confirmed tropical storms and hurricanes. The studio has not yet explained how often they occur or what they change in missions.
The main details appeared in Game Informer on September 29, 2026. The magazine spoke with Owen Shepherd, Rockstar’s vice president of lighting and rendering. It published a separate free article on the weather system; VGC and MP1st also published more detailed comments from the developer.
How GTA 6 weather changes between areas
Local weather means rain occupies a particular part of the world. Game Informer gives a clear example: it is dry and sunny around the player, while a downpour falls in another part of the map visible from a distance.
For trips across Leonida, that is an interesting change. You can see bad weather before reaching it. The downpour may already be over by the time you arrive; in the magazine’s example, puddles remain to show it happened.
Shepherd also describes dynamic cloud formations moving across the map. In a quotation published by VGC, he contrasts a clear winter sky in Miami with the towering storm clouds of a Florida summer or autumn. This describes a range of weather conditions. It does not establish a complete calendar of changing seasons.
What remains after a downpour
Game Informer describes wet ground and puddles that persist after rain. They let someone who arrives later see that a downpour recently passed through.
A rainbow may appear after rain when the lighting is right. That condition matters: the source does not promise a rainbow after every downpour. Nor does it give an exact time for the road to dry.
Puddles alone say nothing about flooded streets or how deep water can be while a car still drives through it.
Wind from shore to sea and between buildings
Shepherd’s comments reproduced by MP1st mention breezes after sunset, rising air currents and the way buildings affect wind. He also names visible effects: hair and litter swirl on rooftops, while gusts ripple water and bend marsh grass.
The English quotation uses the word offshore. Here it means a breeze blowing from land toward water. The US National Weather Service glossary also calls this a land breeze; land cools faster than water at night.
The effect of wind on vehicle handling and shooting has not been described.
How Rockstar describes hurricanes
Hurricanes are no longer merely an assumption based on their occurrence in Florida. Their presence is directly confirmed by Game Informer’s free report.
In Shepherd’s fuller description reproduced by MP1st, severe weather brings heavy clouds, strong wind and abundant rain. Water pours from roof edges and streetlights, thunder can be heard, and lightning illuminates the clouds. These details convey what a powerful storm scene may look and sound like.
Destroyed neighborhoods, collapsing buildings and mandatory robberies during a hurricane remain speculation. Game Informer separately notes that the frequency of major storms and their effects on gameplay and story have not been disclosed.
What the official screenshots show
An official image of Ambrosia, one of GTA 6’s locations, shows industrial structures under heavy clouds and a bright branching flash in the sky. It illustrates a stormy atmosphere. One still image cannot tell us whether this is specifically a hurricane, how fast the clouds move or what happens to the city afterward.

In a nighttime image of Port Gellhorn, wet road and parking surfaces reflect signs and vehicle lights. The image does not show how long they remain wet after rain. The developers described that persistence separately.

Seasons, transport and other open questions
No hurricane schedule has been published. It is unclear whether storms occur randomly, follow an in-game season or appear at particular points in the story.
The checked materials do not explain how much rain affects tire grip, boat handling or aircraft flight.
There is also no description of full seasonal changes with snow, manual weather controls, lightning damage or rules governing when pedestrians and animals shelter from rain. These are questions for future explanations from Rockstar and for the released game. What we do know is that a downpour can be seen in another area and that its traces may remain when you get there later.
