GTA 6 age rating: 17+, 18+ and 21 in different countries
GTA 6 age ratings across ESRB, PEGI, USK, CERO and other systems. Why it is restricted, the removed PEGI listing and parental controls.

GTA 6 is rated Mature 17+ by the US ESRB and PEGI 18 in the UK PlayStation Store. The game is intended for adults: its warnings mention violence, blood, nudity, sexual content, strong language, drugs and alcohol. There is no single age number worldwide. The UAE and Saudi Arabian stores, for example, display 21 for GTA VI.
We checked ratings databases and regional store listings on October 28, 2026. Below, we distinguish an agency’s own record from a store listing. This matters because a rating for the full game, a classification of promotional material and an older press report can concern different things.
What age rating does GTA 6 have in different countries?
| Region | Rating | Where verified |
|---|---|---|
| US and Canada | ESRB M, Mature 17+ | GTA VI entry in the ESRB database |
| UK | PEGI 18 | UK PlayStation Store; a current PEGI database search does not return GTA VI |
| Germany | USK 18 | USK database and German PlayStation Store |
| Australia | R 18+ | Australian PlayStation Store |
| New Zealand | R18 | New Zealand PlayStation Store |
| Japan | CERO Z, ages 18 and up | Japanese PlayStation and PS Store pages |
| Brazil | ClassInd 18+ | Brazilian PlayStation Store |
| UAE | MRO 21 | UAE PlayStation Store |
| Saudi Arabia | GMEDIA 21 | Saudi PlayStation Store |
Sony’s Mexican listing displayed the US ESRB Mature 17+ rating when we checked it. An age number from an early country roundup should therefore not simply be applied to the current listing: check the particular store and region.

The official German PS5 record is dated October 13, 2026. Japan already displays CERO Z, although an old PlayStation FAQ answer still says the rating has yet to be determined. The current listing and its sales terms are more informative here than that outdated FAQ answer.
Why GTA 6 has an adult rating
The ESRB lists seven content descriptors for GTA VI. They explain the restriction but do not describe the game’s mechanics.
| ESRB descriptor | What it means |
|---|---|
| Blood and Gore | Blood and depictions of mutilation |
| Intense Violence | Graphic depictions of violence |
| Mature Humor | Adult humor, including sexual jokes |
| Nudity | Explicit or prolonged nudity |
| Strong Language | Strong profanity |
| Strong Sexual Content | Explicit and/or frequent depictions of sexual behavior |
| Use of Drugs and Alcohol | Consumption of drugs and alcohol |

The “and/or” distinction matters: the descriptor can reflect how explicit scenes are, how frequent they are, or both. The Australian and New Zealand stores separately warn of Sex Scenes. Their content and the player’s role are discussed in our GTA 6 sex scenes article.
Germany’s USK lists its own reasons: pronounced violence, drugs and criminal role models. The last point means criminal acts may be presented without criticism or as an attractive adventure. Reducing GTA’s adult rating to nudity alone would miss both the violence and the role the player takes in its criminal world.
Why the numbers 17+, 18+ and 21 differ
The numbers come from different systems. The ESRB gives GTA VI Mature 17+, PEGI uses its adult 18 category, and stores in the UAE and Saudi Arabia display local 21 labels. They do not form one scale on which a higher number automatically means more violence in a particular version.
An age icon alone cannot tell us whether a country cut a scene, changed dialogue or released the same content. Comparing that requires information about regional versions. Japan’s CERO Z rating is not, by itself, a list of censorship changes.
Age suitability and access rules also vary. The ESRB describes M content as generally suitable for ages 17 and up. In Australia, R 18+ is a legally restricted adult category, while Sony in Japan explicitly says that CERO Z products cannot be sold to anyone under 18. None of these labels should be turned into a universal worldwide purchase rule.
For Russian readers, “18+” is a convenient shorthand for an adult game. PEGI 18, however, does not establish a separate Russian classification of GTA VI. We do not attribute to the game a Russian decision that we could not confirm in official sources.
One more distinction: PEGI explains that an age rating concerns content, not difficulty. A child’s ability to drive a car or win a shootout in a game does not change what the warnings mean.
What happened to the PEGI listing?
On October 3, VGC reported that PEGI published a detailed GTA VI description and then quickly removed it. According to the outlet’s account, it mentioned graphic violence, drug use, sexual content and the ability to harm animals.
Our October 28 PEGI search did not return a GTA VI listing, while the UK PS Store continued to show PEGI 18. These are two different levels of evidence: a current store label and VGC’s report of an earlier agency description. The reason the entry disappeared cannot be established from this. An empty search result also does not prove that the rating was revoked.

A promotional rating versus a game rating
Australia’s register has a GTA VI record dated August 27, 2026: R18+ with a warning about high-impact violence, sex scenes and drugs. Its category field, however, reads Demonstration (Self Selected). This classifies demonstration material and cannot be described as a detailed assessment of the entire forthcoming game. The current Australian PS Store listing separately supports the game’s rating.

New Zealand’s An Extended Look page can cause similar confusion. The Classification Office explicitly calls its subject a 26-minute promotional film self-rated by Netflix. The GTA VI rating in New Zealand’s store must be considered separately from that film’s warnings.
The exact Australian label matters too: GTA VI currently has R 18+ in the store. X 18+, which appears in some early retellings, refers to adult films in Australia’s ratings guide. It cannot replace the game’s present label.
Is GTA 6 rated higher than GTA 5?
There is no increase in the ESRB category: GTA V is also Mature 17+ and carries the same set of seven descriptors. The US system has a separate Adults Only 18+ category above M, but GTA VI has not been assigned it. Calling M “the ESRB’s highest rating” would be wrong.
This does not mean individual scenes in the two games are identical. One category covers varied content and does not measure the number or detail of scenes. A claim that this is “the most adult GTA” needs a specific comparison, not just a photograph of the age icon.
What else an age rating cannot tell you
Alongside GTA VI’s rating is In-Game Purchases, a warning about spending real money. In the ESRB system this is a separate interactive element that does not affect the age category. It alone does not prove the presence of loot boxes, a casino or a required payment to finish the game. The absence of a separate gambling warning does not provide a complete list of activities either: the ESRB stresses that its content descriptors do not list everything in a game.
A rating does not guarantee a release date. The ESRB reviews material before release; its decision is neither technical approval of a finished build nor a promise that the game will not be delayed. An old Rating Pending label means the final rating was still awaited when that advertisement appeared. It is not another GTA VI age category.
Can settings make the game suitable for a child?
We found no confirmed description of a GTA VI filter that removes all adult content. It is therefore premature to promise a “child-friendly version” by disabling blood, nudity or profanity. Console family settings serve another purpose: restricting access to a game and spending, rather than rewriting its story scenes.
First, add a separate child account to the family group. The settings apply to that account; on PS5 the child must also verify their email and sign in with their own console account.
On PS5, open Settings, then Family and Parental Controls, then Family Management. Select the child account and set an age level for games. Check the monthly PlayStation Store spending limit separately: Sony’s support page says its default is zero.
On Xbox Series X|S, you can limit age-based access through a Microsoft family group and its app and game filters. Microsoft also describes Ask a parent, a purchase approval setting. Check the age filter and payment approval separately: access to an adult game and the ability to buy something are different settings.
The consoles themselves are covered in our GTA 6 on PlayStation and GTA 6 on Xbox articles.
