GTA 6 on PS5: Slim, Pro, PS4 and what we know about FPS
GTA 6 on PS5, Slim and Pro: supported consoles, 30 and 60 FPS, the download code in the box, account regions, SSD space and Remote Play from PS4.

GTA 6 is coming to PS5, PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro on November 19, 2026. A standard PlayStation 5 will run it; you do not need a Pro just to play. There will be no PS4 or PS4 Pro version. Sony already labels the game PS5 Pro Enhanced, but detailed graphics modes and final frame rates remain undisclosed. Development lead Rob Nelson discussed frame rate during a visit to Rockstar North, as reported by Flow Games. The 30 FPS report describes the state of development at the time of the presentation. Here is how it fits with the launch details confirmed by Rockstar and PlayStation.
Which PlayStation consoles will get GTA 6?
Rockstar lists the PlayStation 5 family. Sony names PS5 and PS5 Pro separately. The smaller PS5 commonly called Slim is a redesign of the same PS5, not a separate platform to look for on the list.
| Console | GTA 6 support |
|---|---|
| Original PS5, disc or Digital Edition | Yes, a PS5 version is announced |
| PS5 Slim, disc or Digital Edition | Yes, it belongs to the PS5 family |
| PS5 Pro | Yes, the game carries the PS5 Pro Enhanced label |
| PS4, PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro | No native version; streaming from your own PS5 via Remote Play may be possible |
| PlayStation Portal | A remote-play device; no separate installed GTA 6 version is announced |
The game is not out yet. A preorder, store listing or start of preloading does not mean the story is playable. The confirmed launch date is the same for standard PS5 and Pro.
GTA VI is also coming to Xbox Series X and Series S. The Plays Best on PS5 wording reflects Sony and Rockstar’s partnership, not exclusivity. See our GTA 6 platforms guide for the full list and our Xbox versions guide for the other consoles.
Will PS5 Slim run GTA 6?
Yes. Slim does not need a reduced version of GTA VI. When introducing the smaller console, Sony said it had fitted PS5 technology into a more compact body. Slim describes the design, not the loss of support for new games.
Do not confuse console size, storage capacity and graphics power. More storage holds more games but does not raise FPS by itself. Being a PS5 is what matters for compatibility; installation also requires enough free space.
Digital Edition does not mean a weaker PS5 either. Sony’s official FAQ says the original disc and disc-free models perform equally. Buying digitally does not force a lower-quality graphics mode. Compare actual models: a disc-free PS5 Pro and a standard PS5 differ in hardware because one is a Pro, not because one lacks a disc drive.
A drive reads compatible discs. One can be added separately to compact PS5 models, but Rockstar says the boxed GTA VI edition contains a download code. That detail matters more here.
Will PS5 Pro run GTA 6?
Yes. Sony explicitly lists PS5 Pro, and the game listing carries a PS5 Pro Enhanced label. Pro improvements are promised, although the label does not specify resolution, ray-tracing settings or frame rate.
Pro has a more powerful GPU, enhanced ray tracing and PSSR, which uses machine learning to reconstruct a more detailed image. Developers could use those resources for sharper visuals, more complex effects or smoother motion, depending on their choices.
At the console’s announcement, Sony said rendering could be up to 45% faster than on standard PS5. That figure cannot be converted into a specific GTA VI frame rate. It describes graphics capability under particular conditions, not an equal gain in every game. Sony itself says Pro enhancements vary by title.
The label confirms Pro enhancements. A 60 FPS promise would need separate evidence.
Where did 30 FPS come from, and is 60 FPS still possible?
FPS is the number of frames a game displays each second. More frames can make motion and controls feel smoother, but each frame must be processed faster.
After visiting Rockstar North, Flow Games reported on August 27, 2026 that development lead Rob Nelson said console versions were running at 30 FPS at that stage, including PS5 Pro. The report contains an important qualification: according to the outlet, Nelson needed to check with the technical team about a 60 FPS mode at launch or later.
This account is neither a promise of 60 FPS nor a final ruling that such a mode is impossible. It describes work in progress and leaves the question open. The Rockstar and Sony listings checked for this article do not provide final mode tables for standard PS5 and Pro.
In its analysis of An Extended Look, Digital Foundry explained that both CPU and GPU work can make high frame rates difficult. If the limit lies in simulating the world, traffic and other CPU tasks, lowering resolution alone will not solve it. Pro’s stronger graphics hardware therefore does not prove that frame rate can double. This is an analyst’s technical argument, not a measurement of the released game.
Rockstar’s official An Extended Look of August 27 was captured entirely in-game on PlayStation 5. It shows what GTA VI looked like on that platform when recorded. YouTube stream quality, a promotional 4K label or one smooth scene cannot establish the game’s internal resolution or sustained performance. We discuss changes between presentations in our GTA 6 graphics evolution guide.

What has Sony confirmed about DualSense and audio?
PlayStation features include DualSense haptic feedback, adaptive triggers with variable resistance and use of the controller’s built-in speaker. Sony also describes Tempest 3D Audio and fast SSD loading.
These are meaningful PS5 features, but the description has limits. General adaptive-trigger support does not establish how every gun or accelerator pedal will feel. Fast loading does not promise the complete absence of loading screens. Specific sensations and differences between scenes can only be assessed in the game.
Sony lists these features for PS5 generally. None makes Pro necessary to experience Jason and Lucia’s story.
Boxed edition, code regions and preloading
Rockstar’s support article states that the physical GTA VI edition contains a digital download code and no disc. A disc drive is therefore unnecessary to redeem the code, and buying a box does not remove the need to download the game.
PlayStation codes have regional groups. A code must match the account’s region, not merely display a PS5 logo. For example, the North American group covers the US and Canada, while Japanese accounts have a separate group. Rockstar’s support article lists all groups. Xbox’s rule about region-free codes should not be applied to Sony.
Preloading begins on November 12 at local midnight. Rockstar expects boxed codes to begin shipping and being distributed on November 12 so buyers can download in advance. Delivery depends on the retailer. A downloaded copy waits for the November 19 launch; preloading is not a week of early access.
Sony offers Standard and Ultimate Editions, plus an Ultimate upgrade for owners of Standard. Edition extras do not promise a different FPS. Before buying, verify the full Grand Theft Auto VI title, platform, edition and region: GTA V listings and reseller offers also appear in searches for the sixth game.
Do you need PS Plus, GTA+ or a constant internet connection?
Sony’s listing describes GTA VI as a single-player game that can be played offline. It does not list PS Plus as a requirement to launch the story. Obtaining a digital copy, downloading it and redeeming a code still require access to the relevant services. Offline play does not mean purchase and installation work without internet.
The month of GTA+ offered with eligible digital preorders is a separate bonus. It is not PS Plus and does not confirm GTA VI’s inclusion in a subscription catalog. The offer has activation terms, automatic paid renewal and regional exclusions, including the Russian Federation in Sony’s list. An ad for the preorder does not guarantee the bonus for every account.
The current description concerns the single-player game. Conditions for a possible future online component cannot be inferred from GTA V’s GTA Online rules.
SSD space and the 210 GB report
On October 27, the PlayStation Game Size account posted a 210 GB download size for GTA VI Standard on PS5. This is a third-party tracker’s original report, not Rockstar’s final announced installation size. It says nothing definitive about another platform or extra space needed for updates.
PS5 owners should check actual free space in storage settings. Advertised capacity differs from available space, and other games already occupy part of the SSD. The reported number should not be treated as the exact amount to clear for all future patches. See our GTA 6 install size guide for the history of figures and their official status.
Under Sony’s rules, PS5 games run from internal storage or a compatible M.2 SSD. An external USB drive can store their data, but the game must be moved back to run. A free terabyte on a USB drive therefore does not solve the launch-space question.
Buying an additional M.2 drive is not required for compatibility. If the internal SSD has enough room, no separate drive is needed to play.
Can you play from PS4 or PlayStation Portal?
Sony does not offer a native PS4 version of GTA VI. A PS4 can, however, display a game running on your own PS5 through PS5 Remote Play. The PS5 runs the game while PS4 sends controls and displays the video stream.
Sony’s instructions require current system software on both consoles, the same account, a DualShock 4 controller and a fast connection. Sony recommends at least 5 Mbps both down and up, with 15 Mbps or more for a better experience. Remote Play must be enabled on PS5. Waking it from rest mode also requires settings for internet connection and network wake. None of this runs GTA VI on a PS4 alone.
PlayStation Portal has two distinct modes. Remote Play streams from your PS5 and does not itself require PS Plus. Cloud streaming uses Sony’s servers, requires PS Plus Premium and is limited to supported games and regions. Cloud capability in general does not establish that GTA VI will join that catalog. There is no confirmed basis yet to buy Portal as a guaranteed way to play GTA VI without a PS5.
Should you replace a PS5 you already own?
If you own a standard PS5 or Slim, compatibility is confirmed. You do not need to upgrade to Pro out of concern that GTA VI will fail to launch. Compare sharpness, effects and smoothness when the actual graphics modes and tests of the final game become available.
Before launch, check your model, access to a suitable license and free SSD space. Code and preload terms are published; detailed performance differences still need clarification. That is a sound way to prepare without treating a Pro marketing label or a third-party size report as the game’s full specification.
