How big is GTA 6? Download and install size on PS5, Xbox and PC
The official GTA 6 file size, the origins of the 200 GB and 676 GB rumors, preload dates, download-code boxes and how to check free space on PS5 and Xbox.

As of October 24, 2026, the official GTA 6 size in gigabytes has not been published on the Rockstar, PlayStation or Xbox pages we checked. Neither 150, 200 nor 300 GB can yet be called a confirmed download or install size.
The “200+ GB” story has a specific origin: Cyberleek’s claim about a build he says he has. It does not establish how much space the store version will use. Rockstar has, however, announced when preloading begins and explained what the boxed edition contains. Those details help you prepare for the download without treating rumors as specifications.
What we know about size by platform
| Platform | Confirmed size | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro | No figure on the official pages checked | Check the install requirement for your edition when it becomes available |
| Xbox Series X | No figure published | A purported leaked build is not the retail install size |
| Xbox Series S | No figure published | A console with less storage does not automatically receive a smaller game |
| PC and laptops | No official figure | Rockstar has not announced a PC version in the materials checked |
We checked the GTA VI website, PlayStation’s game page, the Standard Edition listing in the PS Store and Xbox’s game page. The lack of a number in those web listings does not make an estimate an official specification. If a store posts a size, check its platform, edition and package version.
Where the 200, 676 and 750 GB figures came from
Cyberleek’s “200+ GB”
On October 13, VideoCardz described Cyberleek’s revised plan. It mentioned a “full playable build” exceeding 200 GB that he said he would release if the market value of a cryptocurrency token linked to him reached a target.
Two limits matter. First, this is the leaker’s claim, not an independent measurement of the files by our editors or an official Rockstar specification. Second, a development build and a prepared store package may contain different data. VideoCardz also notes the possibility of test files and tools that would not ship with the game.
That does not mean the released game must be smaller than 200 GB. Its final size cannot be found by simple subtraction: we do not know what that build contains, how it is compressed or what will change before release. The number explains a rumor, but it does not tell you how much free space your console will need.
The 676.7 GB screenshot
In June 2026, an image circulated that purported to show a 676.7 GB Xbox Store listing. Insider Gaming called it likely fake, pointing to a parody GameJoker account and an option to install the game on Xbox One, a platform for which GTA VI has not been announced.
That is an assessment of a particular image, not a Rockstar announcement of the game’s size. There is no basis for treating 676.7 GB as a confirmed storage requirement.
The older 750 GB rumor
The 750 GB claim was circulating in 2023 alongside promises of a 400-hour story. Insider Gaming examined it on September 12, 2023, long before the current period leading up to release. Recirculating that old figure does not turn it into a new size leak.
Download size and storage space: what is the difference?
People often use “size” for three different things:
- Download size: the data your console receives over the internet.
- Installed size: the space the current version of the game occupies on a drive.
- Free space needed to install or update: the space the system asks you to make available to finish the operation.
These figures need not match. Files can be transferred and stored in compressed form, while installation and updates may require extra working space. There is no basis for imposing a universal “exactly twice the size” rule on GTA 6 or adding an invented 50 GB day-one patch to an estimate. The size of any day-one patch is also unconfirmed.
A polished trailer and a large map do not provide a formula for converting a game into gigabytes. The actual assets and how they are packaged affect size. For example, compression technology developer RAD Game Tools explains how texture processing changes the size of game data. That is a general technical example, not confirmation that GTA VI uses a particular method or compression percentage.
For the same reason, you cannot multiply the size of GTA V or Red Dead Redemption 2 by the difference in world area. We cover the GTA 6 map size separately: the area of the game world and space on an SSD answer different questions.
When can you download it, and do you need a disc?
Rockstar’s edition support page lists preloading from local midnight on November 12, 2026. The boxed edition contains a digital download code, with no disc inside. You can use the code to preload after receiving it; the boxed edition itself is scheduled to ship and become available for pickup from November 12.
Buying the box therefore does not avoid a download or save storage by running the game from a disc. Available storage, internet access and when you receive the code all matter when preparing.
Preloading will let you see the size of the package actually being downloaded, but the announced date alone says nothing about its size. Updates may arrive before launch. Do not treat the first number you see as a permanent specification for every edition and platform.
There is also no confirmed difference in gigabytes between Standard and Ultimate. Extra items and content access do not by themselves prove there is a separate large download. Without store data, you cannot add a guessed “Ultimate size” to Standard. The option to install or remove individual GTA VI components is likewise unconfirmed. A console’s general add-on management features do not promise that this game’s main package can be reduced.
How much space should you clear, and where do you check?
“Clear 200 GB and you will definitely have enough” would currently be an unsupported promise. A better step is to see what fills your drive now, then compare its free space with the console’s own requirement when the package becomes available. Check the drive on which the game will be installed: free gigabytes on a USB drive do not add to the internal SSD. On PS5, free space on the internal SSD and an added M.2 SSD cannot be combined for one game either; its data cannot be split between them.
On PS5, open Settings, then Storage. Sony explains this screen and how to move games. You can remove or move an installation you no longer need to make room. Save data lives in a separate section; you do not need to delete it to clear space for GTA VI. PS5 cloud save storage requires PlayStation Plus and does not replace storage for the game itself.
Once GTA VI becomes available to download, check the requirement in the console’s product listing. Sony’s instructions say to open the game in your library, choose the more-options menu and view the product. The minimum free-space figure shown there is more useful than an arbitrary internet estimate.
On Xbox, open Profile & system, then Settings, System and Storage devices. 2K’s instructions describe how to inspect contents, remove games and manage add-ons. Remove installed game files you do not currently need, rather than save data. Leave room for later updates too, although the exact reserve GTA VI will require is still unknown.
Can you use an external drive?
For PS5 games, a USB drive can act as an archive: you must move the data back to the internal SSD or a compatible M.2 SSD before playing. Optimized Xbox Series X|S games run from the internal SSD or a compatible expansion card; an ordinary USB drive can also hold them for later transfer.
These are PS5 and Xbox storage rules, not a special GTA VI installation arrangement. They can help you free up fast storage now. An unconfirmed size rumor alone is no reason to buy an additional SSD.
Frequently asked questions
How big will GTA 6 be on Xbox Series S?
There is no confirmed figure. Microsoft has explained that some games may take less space on Series S because they use a different set of textures. You cannot apply that general possibility to GTA VI and subtract a percentage in advance: its package contents have not been published.
How big will GTA 6 be on Xbox Series X?
The Series X version’s size is also unconfirmed. Neither parity with PS5 nor a required difference from Series S has been established.
How big is GTA 6 on PC?
There is no official size. Rockstar’s pages checked here announce consoles, so tables with a specific PC gigabyte figure remain predictions. The same applies to laptops. We cover the status of the computer version in GTA 6’s PC release and computer specifications in system requirements.
Free SSD space and RAM are not interchangeable: the amount of memory does not tell you whether the game files will fit on your drive.
How big is the GTA 6 download, and how long will it take?
The size is still unknown, so an exact download time cannot be calculated. For illustration, a hypothetical 200 GB transferred at a constant 100 Mbps would take about 4 hours and 27 minutes without overhead. This is a calculation example, not a prediction of GTA VI’s size. Actual time depends on download speed, servers and pauses; installation may take additional time.
Is there a separate GTA 6 Online size?
The Xbox listing checked describes GTA VI as a single-player game. There is no confirmed size for a separate online client. A bonus month of GTA+ does not justify adding the installed size of GTA V’s GTA Online to GTA VI.
How big will GTA 6 be on PS4 or phones?
No official versions for these devices are announced on the game pages checked. They have no confirmed install size. See our announced platforms guide for the platform list.
