GTA 6 is coming to Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S on November 19, 2026. Rockstar and Xbox list both consoles, including the smaller Series S. No Xbox One or Xbox 360 version has been announced. Frame rate, or FPS, is the number of frames the game displays each second and affects how smooth it looks. Final resolutions and graphics modes for the two Xbox consoles have not been published. The report of 30 FPS came from an account of a game presentation at Rockstar North, where development lead Rob Nelson spoke about the state of the console versions at that time.

Which Xbox consoles will get GTA 6?

The official Xbox Series X|S label names two models from the same generation. It does not include Xbox One S or One X, despite the similar letters.

Xbox Series X, disc drive or All-DigitalIncluded in the announced release

Xbox 360No version announced

Check the full name of your console. An “Xbox S” listing may refer to devices from different generations. Changing the storage drive does not turn an Xbox One S into a Series S. Xbox One X is more powerful than the standard One, but no GTA 6 version has been announced for it either.

The materials checked contain no detailed official explanation of why Rockstar is not releasing the game on older Xbox consoles. The demands of a large open world provide general technical context, but they should not be presented as a specific reason given by the developers. The broader device list, including PlayStation, is in our GTA 6 platforms overview.

Will Xbox Series S run GTA 6?

Yes. Series S is officially listed for the game by Rockstar, the Xbox page and the Microsoft Store listing. Whether GTA 6 will launch on the console is settled. Image quality and smoothness require separate information.

The concern comes from real hardware differences. Series S has fewer graphics and memory resources than Series X. In the table, TFLOPS describe graphics processor compute capacity. RAM holds data while a game runs; the SSD stores installed files.

Console specificationSeries SSeries X
Graphics performance in Xbox specifications4 TFLOPS12 TFLOPS
GDDR6 RAM10 GB16 GB
Internal SSD options512 GB and 1 TB1 TB and 2 TB

These specifications explain why identical visuals cannot be assumed. But a 4-to-12 ratio does not translate into a ready-made FPS ratio. The CPU, graphics work and settings chosen by the developers all matter, and the two Series consoles have a similar CPU foundation. Lowering the resolution reduces some image-processing work, but it does not remove calculations for moving cars, people’s behavior and other world systems.

Digital Foundry separately discusses the difficulty of a Series S version. In its analysts’ view, lighting and ray-tracing effects, as well as hair and cloth simulation, may not scale down as readily as resolution. Less RAM adds another constraint. The familiar approach of taking a lighter 60 FPS mode from the stronger console and running it at 30 FPS on the smaller one may therefore be insufficient here. This is a forecast based on footage captured on PS5. It does not establish the specific settings, resolution or disabled effects of the finished Series S version.

Take-Two addressed concerns about the smaller console on November 6, 2024. During an earnings call, analyst Clay Griffin asked about the weaker Series S in light of GTA 6’s technical ambitions. Company head Strauss Zelnick replied that its studios know how to support platforms with different hardware levels and that he was not particularly worried. This was a statement about the development approach. He did not promise identical settings, resolution or 60 FPS.

The 512 GB Series S should not be treated as a separate, weaker platform either. Here the number describes storage capacity. It affects how much content can be installed; it does not mean GTA 6 requires the 1 TB model.

Will Xbox Series X run GTA 6?

Series X is also part of the official release. It has more graphics and memory resources, making it the more powerful device in the announced Xbox family. Rockstar has not disclosed exactly how GTA 6 will use that headroom.

On the console’s own page, Xbox advertises 4K and up to 120 FPS. Those describe what the device can support with a suitable game and display. They do not confirm 4K at 60 FPS in GTA 6 or a separate performance mode. Even the “Optimized for Series X|S” badge in the game listing is no substitute for a list of its graphics modes.

Series X comes in models with a disc drive and in an All-Digital model. A drive alone is no sign of a different GTA 6 mode. For the announced boxed edition, another condition matters more: Rockstar says it contains a download code, not a disc.

What do we know about 30 and 60 FPS?

The number 30 has a specific source, so it would be inaccurate to say nothing at all is known about frame rate.

On August 27, 2026, Flow Games published reports about video creator Davy Jones’s visit to Rockstar North. According to Rob Nelson’s remarks as reported by the outlet, the console versions were running at 30 frames per second at that development stage. He made no promise of a 60 FPS mode when asked: whether it would appear at launch or later needed clarification from the technical team.

The 30 FPS report describes the game’s state at the time of the presentation. The final modes for Series S and Series X have not been announced, so it is too early to say that 60 FPS will definitely be available or will never appear. The current official listings give no separate specifications for the two Xbox versions.

In its direct analysis of Extended Look, Digital Foundry explains why reaching 60 FPS may be harder than simply lowering resolution. Graphics can be simplified, but a dense world also puts demands on the CPU. If calculating one frame takes the CPU too long, rendering fewer pixels alone will not be enough to reach 60 FPS. The analysts discuss this as a reason to doubt that a 60 FPS mode will be easy to deliver, not as a test of either Xbox version.

The capture platform is especially important here. Rockstar explicitly says An Extended Look was captured on PlayStation 5. It can inform discussion of the graphics shown, but it cannot measure Series S performance. Uneven-looking camera turns do not always mean an FPS drop either: Digital Foundry also examines animation timing and camera motion. None of these observations yields results for an Xbox version that has not yet been tested. Our GTA 6 graphics article looks more closely at sharpness, motion, lighting and video processing.

Digital edition, box and preloading

The lack of a disc drive on Series S does not prevent owners from getting its announced GTA 6 version. Moreover, Rockstar’s support page states that the boxed edition contains a digital download code, with no disc in the box. This also matters to Series X owners expecting to install the game from physical media.

A box and a digital purchase differ in how you obtain the license. In both cases, the game files must be downloaded. Check the platform before buying a code: you need the Xbox version. Rockstar also states that purchased GTA 6 codes for Xbox are not region locked. That does not mean every store, payment method or promotion is available in every country.

Preloading for a digital preorder begins November 12 at local midnight. For the boxed edition, access to preloading depends on when you receive and activate the code: shipping and collection of boxes are also planned from November 12. The game’s launch date remains November 19. Downloading files early does not grant early access.

How much SSD space will be needed?

As of the October 27 check, the official GTA 6 installation size for Xbox was not stated in the listings reviewed. So it is not possible to assert either that a 512 GB Series S will lack capacity or that every such console already has enough free space. Nominal capacity differs from the space left after the system, apps and other games. We cover the history of download-size claims in our GTA 6 storage article.

There is another question: where to install it. The GTA 6 listing labels the game as optimized for Xbox Series X|S. Xbox and Seagate’s official explanations say that such games require the internal SSD or a compatible Storage Expansion Card for Series X|S. A regular external USB drive can store the files, but an optimized game must be moved back to suitable storage to run.

Check this before preloading. Having a large USB drive does not mean the storage needed to run the game is sorted out. Nor does buying a higher-capacity Series S justify expecting another graphics mode simply because it has more space.

Game Pass, internet and cloud play

The Microsoft Store listing describes GTA 6 as a single-player game. The publisher also notes that some features and services may require an internet connection and a Rockstar account. The Single player label alone is no promise that absolutely everything will work offline after installation.

The checked listing does not announce GTA 6 for Game Pass. A month of GTA+, listed among digital preorder bonuses, is a separate offer; it means neither Game Pass nor access to GTA 6 itself through a subscription. The feature list also does not confirm Xbox Play Anywhere, a shared PC purchase or crossplay. The listing provides no details on transferring saves between platforms either. Series X|S support alone makes none of these promises.

With cloud play, the game runs on a remote server while your device receives video and sends button inputs. That option also needs confirmation for GTA 6 specifically. In his original October 7 post, Xbox strategy head Matthew Ball denied exclusive streaming and streaming to PC. He did not clarify other devices there. His words therefore neither promise cloud play on Xbox One nor rule out every possible cloud scenario. The context is preserved in our report on the Xbox statement.

The ROG Xbox Ally handhelds need a distinction too: they are not Series S consoles. Xbox describes PC stores and supported PC games for them. The Xbox name on the hardware does not add GTA 6 to the native Windows library. Our GTA 6 PC release article covers the current status of a PC version.

What Xbox owners should check

If you have a Series S or Series X, your console is included in the announced release. Before buying the game, check the device’s full name, the platform of the code or digital license, and the free space on suitable storage.

If smoothness, resolution or image quality will decide your purchase, wait for the final modes and tests of the particular version. Official Series S support is already confirmed. There is not yet enough basis to trade it for a Series X solely because someone else has promised 60 FPS.
