Dogs in GTA 6: breeds, interactions and the pet question

Dogs in GTA 6: identified breeds, praise and petting, studying, treats, owners, police chases and what we know about keeping a pet.

A dog rises on its hind legs and reaches toward Jason

In GTA 6, dogs walk with passersby, accept petting, react to the protagonist and take part in chases. An official gameplay presentation shows options to pet, praise, study and scold a dog. Rockstar has not disclosed whether players can keep a pet of their own. Here is what the scenes show, which breeds have been identified and what the recent Edge preview adds from Rockstar North development head Rob Nelson’s demonstration.

How do you pet a dog, and what is in its menu?

The clearest encounter comes about two minutes into An Extended Look, Rockstar’s extended gameplay presentation. Jason Duval, one of the two protagonists, meets a short-haired dog inside a building. A menu appears on the right:

PRAISEPraiseSquare, in an earlier menu state
PETPetTriangle
SCOLDScoldCircle
STUDYStudyR1

The prompts change during this scene. PRAISE and STUDY are visible at about 1:56.5; PET and SCOLD appear later. This does not establish that praise must come first or that all four actions are always available at once.

An Extended Look, 1:56.5: praise and study are available in this menu state.

The lower part of the interface separately shows DOG and L2. DOG identifies the animal Jason is interacting with. It is not a command named “dog” or evidence of a training system. The button labels belong to the PlayStation version shown; this frame cannot establish the final Xbox controls.

The interaction itself is visible: the dog rises on its hind legs and reaches for Jason, who pets it. When he walks on, the animal looks his way. That shows a response to a person, but says nothing about whether it can follow him through the city.

An Extended Look, 2:00.8: petting appears with a different set of prompts.

A pale halo icon appears on the right after petting. Gamer Guides associates it with an assessment of the protagonist’s behavior. One appearance does not tell us how petting affects that assessment or whether SCOLD has the opposite effect. The scene also does not reveal what the protagonist says when scolding the dog or how it responds.

Studying deserves a closer look. In IGN’s full interview, Rachel Weber asked Nelson directly about STUDY when meeting a dog. He confirmed that studying is tied to collecting and provides more information about animals. He said the mechanic was carried over from Red Dead Redemption 2.

Spanish creator Rubius also mentioned something like a bestiary, a reference guide to fauna, while recounting his private demonstration. The contents of its entries, its detailed screen and rewards for completing it have not been revealed. Nelson’s comments do not establish whether each breed gets a separate collectible entry.

Can you give dogs treats?

In The New York Times preview, journalist Christopher Byrd described Jason petting a passerby’s dog. Nelson explained that players can buy animal treats in small stores and hand them out. Interaction therefore extends beyond petting.

No price, distribution button or effect on a dog’s attitude was specified. The existence of treats does not establish that a dog you meet can be kept.

An owner may refuse to let you pet their dog

According to Rubius, the Rockstar demonstration included an encounter with a woman and her dog. Approaching them brought up a menu allowing the player to speak to the owner and ask permission to pet the animal. It did not turn into a friendly meeting: the dog barked, the woman responded unhappily and the protagonists left.

This adds context to the calm encounter in An Extended Look. A PET option does not mean every dog will welcome a hand immediately. Its owner, and both of their reactions, can shape the brief meeting.

Rubius noted a small physical detail too: Jason’s hand brushed the leash as he walked past, and it reacted to his movement. These details come from the particular Nelson-controlled demonstration, not a verified procedure that will produce the same result with every dog.

Which dog breeds have been spotted?

Rockstar has not published a complete breed list with official labels. Most names come from studying trailers and screenshots. Rockstar Mag’s catalog and detailed breakdown identify these possibilities:

Breed or typeWhere it was identified
ChihuahuaNear people running on the beach in the first trailer
DobermanBeside a person in the second trailer
RottweilerIn an official Vice City screenshot
Possibly an Australian shepherdBeside a cyclist in a Leonida Keys screenshot
American Staffordshire terrierIn the petting scene from An Extended Look
LabradorIn the beach scene from An Extended Look
French bulldogIn a detailed breakdown of that same beach scene

A German shepherd is named separately in Edge’s preview of a police pursuit. Here the basis is a journalist’s account of a demonstration, rather than a fan’s identification of a silhouette.

These names are not a final breed count. The dog in the petting scene, for instance, has been labeled both “staff” and “pitbull” in captions. Two names for one animal do not establish two breeds. Backlighting, distance and people in front of the camera also hinder identification in other scenes. The breakdown leaves some dogs unidentified.

Walks, clothing and life around people

The footage places dogs in residents’ daily lives. A woman walks one on a city street. A pale dog in a harness passes loungers and beachgoers. In an older screenshot from the island region of the Leonida Keys, a dog stands near a cyclist. Another screenshot shows a woman photographing a small dog in Port Gellhorn.

An Extended Look, 18:30: the dog walks among beachgoers to the right of Lucia’s lounger.

There is also a dressier moment. Near the end of An Extended Look, a man in a spacious room bends toward a small dog wearing a bright outfit. The frame shows the clothing and a person’s interaction with the animal. It does not show an outfit selection screen, an accessories shop or player control of this pet.

An Extended Look, 25:57.2: the dog is dressed up, but the scene shows no clothing selection interface.

The launch trailer supplies another context. At about 32 seconds, a dog wearing protective goggles is visible beside Jason inside a helicopter. This brief story shot confirms an animal beside the protagonist without explaining its role. Its name, owner, command options and whether it can freely join missions are unknown.

Domestic life may be less cozy too. Aaron Garbut told Edge about a house wrecked by a dog left there; the protagonist reacted to the unpleasant smell. It is an example of the world’s behavior, not confirmation of a care system for a personal pet.

Attacks: a passerby’s dog and a police shepherd

Edge describes two separate chases. First, Jason stares too long at a man walking a dog on a leash. The man takes the stare as a challenge, releases the animal and it runs after Jason. After a while the dog loses interest and returns to its owner.

In the other episode, Jason and Lucia flee police on a motorcycle. They hit a spike strip, fall and try to escape on foot. A nearby canine unit joins the pursuit. Its German shepherd quickly catches Jason and pins him down.

During the demonstration, colleagues asked Nelson not to shoot the dog. That remark should not be treated as a demonstrated way to escape. Edge does not establish a specific button, how long the hold lasts, the dog’s health or a wanted-star threshold that always summons a K9 unit.

The key point for players is this new participant in a chase. Our separate guide covers police and the wanted system in GTA 6. One shepherd encounter does not explain all canine-unit tactics or scent tracking.

What did South Park show with a dog?

A GTA 6 gameplay clip appeared in Guinea Pig on a Stick, a South Park episode released on October 28, 2026. The official South Park account posted it the next day.

On the beach, a dog relieves itself and its owner picks up after it with a bag. In Dot Esports’ account of the full episode, Jason first throws an object at the owner and provokes him, then picks up the bag and strikes the man in the face with it. The dog belongs to a passerby. The scene does not show Jason walking his own pet.

The ability to pick up such a bag and throw it at people had already been reported in August based on TGG, another attendee of a private demonstration. The October clip thus gives a visible example of an interaction described earlier. It shows how an NPC’s walk can start a conflict, but supplies no damage table or spawn rules for the event.

Can you get your own dog, and will Chop return?

Rockstar has not shown players buying or adopting a dog, taking one home and keeping it as a permanent companion. Buying the animal itself, shelters, names, regular care for one’s pet, training, car rides and companion commands have not been disclosed. Clothing on someone else’s dog likewise does not establish a personal pet wardrobe for players.

It is understandable why players hope for this feature. We have seen different dogs, leashes, conversations with owners and a dedicated interaction menu. Reddit discussions assemble these details into a theory about a personal pet. The crucial step is still conjecture: the actions shown do not explain how an animal becomes the protagonist’s and stays with them between encounters.

The return of Chop, GTA 5’s Rottweiler, is also unconfirmed. A Rottweiler on screen establishes a dog of that appearance, not the identity of a familiar character.

Where can dogs be found in the game world?

Shown encounters take place on Vice City streets, a beach, in the Leonida Keys, in Port Gellhorn and indoors. These are clues from the footage, not confirmed spawn points. We do not yet have a verified map, walking schedule, respawn conditions or breed distribution by district.

Based on material available as of October 31, 2026, dogs interact with people, may reject contact, chase the protagonist and become part of incidental city stories. Keeping your own pet remains a separate question from all those confirmed interactions. Other species and broader fauna details appear in our GTA 6 animals guide.
