How long is GTA 6? What the 80-hour estimate means
What Rob Nelson included in his 80-hour GTA 6 playthrough, where the 75, 100 and 250-hour figures came from, and what is known about story length and 100% completion.

For now, estimates of how long GTA 6 takes to beat rest on one published example: around 80 hours for Rob Nelson, co-head of Rockstar North and Head of Development. According to GamesRadar+ and Shazoo, that included the main story and some optional activities that affect how it unfolds. The figure is not a separate measurement of the story alone or of 100% completion.
Below, we explain what those hours cover, where other widely circulated figures came from, and how that amount of playtime might fit into your evenings. This article uses information checked on October 13, 2026, ahead of Rockstar’s scheduled November 19 release.
Who finished GTA 6 in 80 hours?
GamesRadar+ reported Nelson’s playthrough in late August 2026, citing his interview with The New York Times. According to that report, he finished it in February 2026. Shazoo’s August 27, 2026 article gave the same account: the main story alongside several additional activities that affect its development.
That is one person’s result, and he knows the game from the inside. These reports do not provide a sample of players, an average first-playthrough time or a separate total for the additional activities. There is therefore no basis for adding another 20 hours for a newcomer or promising an experienced player a 40-hour run. Even the build number is unspecified: the February playthrough cannot automatically be treated as a measurement of the final version.
How long is GTA 6’s main story?
The sources examined do not give a separate duration for the story alone. You cannot simply subtract the side activities from Nelson’s total: we do not know how many hours they took. His result is a useful reference for playing through the story with some additional activities, but a more precise answer requires a separate measurement.
Before choosing a figure, it helps to decide what you actually want to finish.
| Goal | What it includes | What is known as of October 13, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Reach the end of the main story | The required story path | The publications examined do not give a separate time |
| Finish the story and some side activities | The story and selected side content | This is the kind of playthrough Nelson’s roughly 80-hour figure describes |
| Reach 100% completion | Whatever the game counts toward 100% | The sources examined provide neither a time measurement nor a list of requirements for 100% |
Reaching 100%, earning every achievement and playing freely after the ending may also involve different amounts of time. You can spend evenings in the open world even after completing your chosen objectives. Applying one playtime figure to all of those goals would be inaccurate.

Why playthrough times may vary
In a separate IGN interview, reproduced on The Double Kill, Nelson explained that at some points in the story, players will need to head out into the world and earn money before they can continue the missions. His examples included stealing and selling cars, as well as robberies. He did not say how long those sections would take.
At those points, making money in the open world becomes part of the path to the next mission. Our article on GTA 6’s story covers the premise and campaign structure in more detail.
Nelson also said the story benefits when players spend time in the world and explore it. Moving quickly from one mission to the next and taking a leisurely detour offer different experiences. That helps explain why playtime will depend on your pace, but it does not let us calculate how much longer any particular playthrough will be.

Where did the 75, 100 and 250-hour figures come from?
Figures with other origins continue to circulate alongside Nelson’s result. It is useful to consider each separately.
75 hours. In August 2025, All.gg published a rumor attributed to the user remiremus_. It described a two-hour prologue and five chapters lasting 6, 13, 16, 22 and 16 hours. Those figures do add up to 75, but correct arithmetic does not establish where the information came from. This is an old, unconfirmed breakdown, rather than a Rockstar measurement. It cannot explain the later 80-hour figure: the sources and the conditions are different.
100 hours or more. In August 2026, TechRadar suggested that exploring the state of Leonida and playing additional content could push the total to 100 hours or more. That increase is the article author’s prediction. The report does not describe a separate, completed 100-hour playthrough.
More than 250 hours. PlayGround author Gutsz based this prediction for 100% completion on the size of the world and its side activities. However, the article first describes the 80 hours as including some additional missions, then uses that figure as the duration of the main story alone. It offers no separate measurement, calculation method or numerical statement from a developer to support the 250-hour figure.
Free-roam play can certainly take longer than progressing to the ending. But picking the largest of these predictions does not make it a confirmed completion time.
Will GTA 6 be longer than GTA V and RDR 2?
The 80-hour estimate often leads to claims that GTA 6 will be Rockstar’s longest game. The problem is that such comparisons typically place GTA V or Red Dead Redemption 2’s story-only time alongside GTA 6’s story plus some additional activities.
A meaningful comparison needs the same conditions for every game: story only, story with side content, or full completion. It also matters whether a figure is one person’s result or an average across several players. Nelson’s personal result, which includes the story and some additional activities, does not yet establish a record for main-story length.
How many evenings would 80 hours take?
If you want a rough idea for your own schedule, you can divide the published 80-hour total into sessions. The table assumes you actually spend the stated amount of time playing each evening.
| Time per evening | Gaming evenings needed |
|---|---|
| 1 hour | 80 |
| 2 hours | 40 |
| 3 hours | 27, with a shorter final evening |
For example, two hours on five evenings a week gives you ten hours of playtime per week. At that pace, 80 hours would take eight weeks. This is a calculation for a chosen amount of playtime, not a promise that you will finish GTA 6 in two months: your playthrough may include different activities and a different pace.
When will a reliable average be available?
After release, several completed playthroughs with clearly defined goals will be more useful. Each result should specify the game version, what the player completed and how they tracked their time. Separate results are needed for the story alone, the story with additional content, and full completion.
Until those figures are available, GTA 6’s practical reference remains limited: Nelson’s published result of around 80 hours for the story with some optional activities. The story alone and 100% completion need their own measurements.
