What is GTA 6 called, and what genre is it?
The full name of GTA 6, what Grand Theft Auto and VI mean, and how action-adventure combines an open world, a story and optional activities.

The full name of GTA 6 is Grand Theft Auto VI. GTA stands for Grand Theft Auto, and VI is the Roman numeral for six. The name refers to stealing a car. The game is an open-world action-adventure: Jason and Lucia’s crime story sits alongside shootouts, driving and things to do outside the main missions. Rockstar confirms the title and story setup, while Xbox lists the game under Action and Adventure.
What is GTA 6’s full name?
Rockstar’s official store calls the game Grand Theft Auto VI. PlayStation and Xbox use the same spelling. Even Rockstar’s Russian-language store page leaves the title in English.
The shorter forms GTA VI, GTA 6 and the Russian “ГТА 6” all refer to the same game. The difference is how the number is written: the full official title uses the Roman numeral VI, while the familiar abbreviation often uses the Arabic numeral 6. GTA takes its letters from Grand Theft Auto.
A store may add Standard Edition or Ultimate Edition to the title. Those words identify an edition. For example, the PlayStation listing for Ultimate Edition separately lists Grand Theft Auto VI itself and additional content. Ultimate Edition is not part of the base game’s full name.
What does Grand Theft Auto mean?
In American English, grand theft auto concerns the theft of a motor vehicle. Wiktionary describes it as stealing or attempting to steal one. Here, auto means a car.
In plain language, the title’s meaning is “car theft” or “stealing a car.” This explains the English expression. It does not turn the official name into a title about a “great car thief”: the phrase names an act, not the person who steals cars.
Grand is easy to misread too. In this expression it points to a more serious category of theft, rather than praising the theft as “grand.” The precise legal definition depends on context, and knowing it is not necessary to understand the game.
The title keeps the series’ automotive and crime themes, but the range of activities extends beyond stealing cars. Rockstar’s description of GTA VI centers on Jason and Lucia, who become caught in a conspiracy across the state of Leonida after a job goes wrong. The setup is covered in more detail in our GTA 6 story guide.
Why VI does not mean the sixth game in the entire series
The Roman numeral VI means six. It continues the numbered line that includes Grand Theft Auto III, IV and V.
The series also has games without a number in the title. Rockstar separately lists Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. You cannot count every release from the latest numeral: 6 does not imply that only five games existed before GTA VI.
Vice City returns as a setting within Leonida. The new game’s full name nevertheless remains Grand Theft Auto VI. Mentioning Vice City as a place does not make “GTA: Vice City 2” its official title.
What genre is GTA 6?
GTA 6 is an open-world action-adventure game. Xbox lists Action and Adventure under Genre, while the PlayStation Store uses the broader Action category. These are different store categories, not evidence of two different versions of the gameplay.
The action side involves acting directly in tense situations: shooting, fighting, driving and escaping pursuit. The adventure side connects those actions to characters, events, exploration and missions. A drive, for instance, can get you to a destination, form part of a chase or become time spent with a companion.
After a presentation at Rockstar North, IGN journalists Matt Purslow and Simon Cardy described being able to ride in the passenger seat and fire while the other protagonist drives. The example shows how driving and shooting can work within one situation. The game is broader than isolated races or gunfights. Our GTA 6 mechanics guide covers those systems in detail.

What does the open world change for the player?
“Open world” describes how the game space is built and the freedom to act within it. Between story missions in GTA VI, players can explore Leonida and find other things to do. IGN’s report mentions pool, kayaking, diving and workouts. Its writers also describe events discovered through exploration without first selecting a mission marker.

The world therefore offers more than a route from one mission to the next. You can spend time on other activities. We cover mini-games and things to do outside the story separately.
The story still has its own constraints. According to the IGN writers, switching between Jason and Lucia is meant to be available as often as possible, but may be disabled at certain story moments. Free exploration coexists with missions that can impose limits. “Open world” does not mean you can cancel any event, enter every building or access the entire map from the first minute.
Is it an RPG, a life simulator or a co-op game?
RPG stands for role-playing game. Character development usually plays a major part in such games. A life simulator focuses on a character’s everyday life, while co-op means several people playing together.
Some features can resemble other genres. IGN, for example, describes exercise changing a character’s physique and strength, as well as the protagonists doing everyday things together. A gym alone does not make the game a full life simulator or RPG. The official platform categories remain Action and Adventure. Role-playing elements and daily-life details can add to the action-adventure game.
Two protagonists do not define the play mode either. Xbox and PlayStation explicitly describe Grand Theft Auto VI as a single-player game. Switching between Jason and Lucia does not mean each is controlled by a different player. Inferring co-op merely from a shot of the two together would be a mistake.
