Jason Duval in GTA 6: his past, military service, first home and pickup
Who is Jason in GTA 6? His army background, life in the Leonida Keys, Brian Heder's house, Vapid Ganado pickup and connection to Lucia.

Jason in GTA 6 is one of two playable protagonists. He is a former soldier. At the story’s beginning, he lives in smuggler Brian Heder’s house in the Leonida Keys and works for local drug runners. Together with the other protagonist, Lucia, he becomes entangled in a major criminal story after a job goes wrong.
Rockstar’s character profiles and an interview with Rob Nelson, Rockstar North’s Head of Development, provide the official foundation. But players are already examining further details: Jason’s tattoo, possible unit, first home and battered pickup. They help us understand him beyond a short biography.
What is known about Jason’s past
Rockstar says Jason grew up around hustlers and criminals. He got into trouble as a teenager, and the army was an attempt to leave that life behind. It is a powerful starting point: Jason did not simply stumble into crime. He had already tried to get away from it.
After his service, he settled in the Leonida Keys, an island region in Leonida, and began working for local drug runners. Rockstar has not yet explained why his attempt to start over ended this way. We do not know what happened during his service, why he left the army or how he met Brian. These gaps matter: without them, it is too early to invent a complete story of trauma, disillusionment or debt.
In LOVE magazine’s interview, Rockstar’s senior vice president of narrative Rupert Humphries clarified why Jason’s criminal path matters to the story. His financial circumstances help explain his participation in drug transport and bank robberies. But the writers offer no ready-made excuse: players will decide whether it was necessary or whether Jason chooses crime because of his character.
Rob Nelson also supplied something absent from the short profile: Jason served in a special forces unit. The developers account for that in missions too. Nelson described an early episode where switching between both protagonists was initially possible, before control was fixed to Jason. In the team’s view, someone with his training should lead the characters through that situation.
Jason’s past therefore exists beyond his biography. It already affects how Rockstar presents his actions.

What the tattoo might say about his service
A tattoo resembling a unit emblem is visible on Jason’s shoulder. Players identified a skull in a beret, a parachute and a knife. One Reddit participant read the lettering as B CO. MARAUDERS. Another could confidently identify only MARAU and tried to reconstruct the rest from visible letters.
If B CO. is read correctly, it may mean B Company. Marauders is more interesting. The history of the US 75th Ranger Regiment includes a Second World War unit known as Merrill’s Marauders. This is a genuine historical connection supported by the US Army’s website. Some players therefore suggest Jason’s tattoo refers to Rangers or a fictional Rockstar unit modelled on them.
Why does this matter in an article about the character? The army’s description of modern Rangers mentions raids and airborne operations. If intentional, the reference portrays Jason as trained for difficult combat tasks. That fits Nelson’s remarks about a mission in which Jason takes the initiative.
The theory does not identify his exact unit, however. GTA has its own fictional world, and players are reading lettering from an image rather than an official biography. I would therefore retain the reasoning itself: what is visible on his shoulder, why it resembles the Rangers, and what such a reference adds to Jason’s portrayal. Those grounds cannot establish that he served in the real 75th Regiment.
Where Jason lives at the beginning
Jason’s first home is in the Leonida Keys. This is a separate island region of the game’s state, rather than Vice City. Rob Nelson says GTA 6’s story starts here and that Jason’s first house has already appeared in the trailer.
The house belongs to Brian Heder, a local old-school smuggler. He continues running business through his boat yard with his wife Lori and prefers delegating dirty work. Jason gets one of Brian’s houses rent-free while helping with local extortion. Jason’s friend Cal Hampton is also connected to Brian.

This adds up to a fairly unpleasant position. Jason has shelter, work and acquaintances, but everything revolves around Brian. Even his accommodation depends on whether he keeps participating in the owner’s business. For someone who once joined the army to escape a troubled environment, it is a telling start.
The house matters beyond biography too. Nelson says Jason and Lucia will change safehouses as the story develops. In the demonstrated safehouse, characters follow their own routines while the player observes everyday actions. The interview does not list what will be available specifically in Jason’s first home, though. Whether it can be used after moving out remains unclear, for example.
I think that would make a useful separate look at the protagonists’ homes. Here, what matters is knowing where Jason begins and why the house says so much about his dependence on Brian.
What car Jason owns
Jason’s pickup is officially named the Vapid Ganado. The Ultimate Edition description calls it a battered, lowered pickup. It also mentions the Ganado Retro Build, but that is not another model: it is a set of exclusive Ganado modifications.
I like that Rockstar gives the car such a specific role in the character’s image. Jason does not have anonymous “mission transport”, but his own old pickup. It suits someone living on the islands, working for local runners and not yet looking in control of his life.
What happens to it later is even more interesting. Nelson says a stolen vehicle can be registered as a personal car in GTA 6. Personal cars can be called to the player and used to store weapons. Storage space is limited early on, with garages available to buy later. That already suggests how vehicles will connect to the protagonists’ daily lives.
But he was describing the general vehicle system, rather than specific Ganado rules. Will Jason’s pickup remain permanently assigned to him? Will it move with him to a new safehouse? Can another personal vehicle replace it? I have not found those answers yet. They should be checked separately when more information appears, rather than applying every known mechanic to this particular pickup.
What meeting Lucia changes
Lucia is the second playable protagonist. Rockstar describes meeting her as something that could become the best or worst thing in Jason’s life. When a job promising easy money goes wrong, they enter a dangerous situation and must rely on each other.

For Jason, it is also a turning point because his life already had clear, if unpleasant, rules before Lucia: Brian’s house, work for local criminals, Cal nearby and drives in the Ganado. Now they must act together, and their relationship becomes part of the story.
Humphries also says the writers deliberately built Jason and Lucia’s relationship around mutual momentum and resistance. Lucia relentlessly pursues a better life, while Jason does not always move at her pace. That contrast emerged as shared scenes were written. Saying one simply leads the other would therefore be too crude: both influence their journey.
Nelson says players will control both characters. Some episodes allow switching; others fix control to one protagonist for story reasons. Their relationship can also develop differently: they may remain accomplices or become a couple. Lucia’s detailed story is better covered separately, but understanding Jason requires recognising that their connection is more than one video or a predetermined line.
Why even Jason’s height is debated
Players examine details so closely that they try to calculate Jason’s height. One discussion proposed 182 cm. Its author connected the figure to files they called a GTA V leak. Commenters objected: the measurements might belong to ordinary base male and female models, and the filenames do not prove these are Jason and Lucia.
Others compared the protagonists in images and accounted for footwear. Those comparisons do not produce a reliable number either. What interests me is the discussion’s logic: one player finds a figure, and others ask which object it actually belongs to. For now, 182 cm remains part of that debate, rather than Jason’s known height. Rockstar has not named his exact age either.
How Jason looks to us now
Jason once tried to leave the criminal world through the army. At GTA 6’s beginning, he is back among runners and extortionists, living on Brian’s terms and driving his old pickup. His military training could nevertheless become important as things grow more dangerous.
That is what interests me about him. He has a past, but we do not yet know what he learned from it. Lucia might offer a chance to change his life, or pull him further into trouble. We know where Jason starts. I already want to see where he ends up in the game itself.
