GTA 6 almost dropped the weapon wheel

videotech summarizes a Jason Schreier video on GTA VI development: the weapon wheel, denser traffic, development struggles, and preparing a Netflix showing.

According to videotech’s summary of Jason Schreier’s latest video, these are new details about GTA VI’s development:

  • The weapon wheel was nearly replaced with a different selection interface, but the developers later changed their minds and brought it back.
  • Some Rockstar artists have been working on GTA VI for more than 11 years. They started by building the map and gathering reference material in Miami.
  • Roads have become narrower and traffic denser than in GTA V.
  • Development ran into serious difficulties in 2019-2022: Rockstar was trying to balance the realism of RDR 2 with familiar GTA gameplay. Internal disagreements and slow progress led some designers to leave.
  • Things improved noticeably around 2022-2023. Teams felt the game was starting to come together.
  • The idea to release An Extended Look on Netflix came from Rockstar. Marketing head Mark Adamson proposed it. The video needed extensive refinement.
  • The art production team grew substantially: around 5-6 people worked in that capacity on GTA V, compared with 65 on GTA VI. That made it much easier to distribute the workload.
