GTA 6 garages: how to store a car and make it your own

How to store stolen cars, buy garages and request a personal vehicle in GTA 6. The three spaces in a preview build, registration, trunks and impound lots.

A garage in GTA 6 will let you store stolen cars, while paid registration will turn an eligible car into a personal vehicle you can call to your location. Early on, storage is limited to three cars. Buying more garages can expand the collection later. Simply leaving a stolen car on the street, putting it in storage and registering it as your own are three different things.

Rob Nelson, head of development and co-studio head of Rockstar North, explained the main rules in an interview with Famitsu. TGG and MikeShowSha, who saw the game at the studio, added details in their own accounts. Here is what they described, and what we still need to learn after GTA VI launches.

Why a stolen car is not yours yet

A temporarily stolen vehicle in GTA VI will have a gray radar icon. Nelson says it remains in the world for a while but disappears after a game restart. Driving away in a sedan you like and leaving it by the road is therefore no way to keep it in your collection.

You can hold a car in a garage before registering it. In his notes, TGG relays Nelson’s example: buy a storage space for a few thousand dollars, steal a car worth $50,000 and park it there until you can register it as your own. The developer explicitly says the car will be safe even though it does not yet belong to the character.

These explanations do not conflict. A temporary car left on the street may disappear, while one deliberately placed in a purchased garage has a storage spot. It becomes a personal vehicle only after a separate registration. The $50,000 example illustrates the difference. It does not establish a registration fee, a minimum garage price or a guarantee that every vehicle can be stored under every circumstance.

How to register a car as your own

According to Nelson, a stolen car can be registered as your own at Pay ‘n’ Spray, the repair and repaint shop. It helps to check the cost first: scanning a car lets you see its registration price in advance. TGG calls the relevant app Waink. It also displays information about a car’s security and resale.

You will not be able to register every stolen car immediately. TGG’s notes say tracker removal unlocks through progression with fences. In Nelson’s demonstration, he stole a car he liked but could not yet register it because the required ability had not been unlocked. Car fences and Pay ‘n’ Spray may themselves unlock as the story progresses. Free space and enough money are therefore not always sufficient. In another video, TGG separately mentioned a restriction on registering expensive cars early in the game.

You can find a model you want, learn what it might cost and keep it until the required ability unlocks. The demonstrations do not, however, provide an exact price list, a mandatory mission for each class or a complete list of cars that cannot be registered. We cover the known cars in GTA 6 separately.

Pay ‘n’ Spray still handles repairs and basic repainting. More elaborate appearance changes belong at customization shops. A storage garage, a registration location and a modification shop serve different purposes, even when all three deal with the same car.

Three spaces at the start: which are already occupied?

In the Famitsu interview, Nelson gave an early limit of just three car spaces. When they are full, you will have to sell a car to make a new one personal. Additional garages around the map will let you own more vehicles.

MikeShowSha described how this worked in the version he saw. Two spaces were already occupied by the protagonists’ cars, Lucia’s and Jason’s, and the third was an extra space. During the demonstration, Jason’s existing car was sold and a stolen one was registered in its place.

The starting vehicles do not appear permanently tied to their owners: in the build shown, one was indeed replaced by selling it and registering another car. At the same time, there is no basis for treating the three spaces as three empty slots in addition to the pair’s cars, or as a separate limit for each protagonist.

Mike’s account describes a particular prerelease build. It does not settle how the final collection is divided between the protagonists or show how additional and bonus garages count toward the overall limit. Nelson separately confirmed that buying garages expands available storage.

Garages can be bought; safehouses unlock through the story

Players will be able to buy garages across Leonida, the state where GTA VI takes place, to expand their collections. In TGG’s explanation, the number of personal cars depends on the spaces available in purchased garages. Nelson’s example with an inexpensive storage space shows that buying one may be useful even before you can register a car you have found.

Housing works differently for Jason and Lucia. According to TGG, safehouses unlock as the story progresses. The pair are on the run, so freely buying a permanent home would not fit their situation. The ability to purchase a garage is no promise that every apartment, villa or business will be available to buy.

A full list of standard garages, exact prices and purchase methods has yet to be published. We cannot direct readers to a particular in-game website or a sign by a gate. Nor is the few-thousand-dollar figure in the developer’s example a universal price for every property.

How to request your car and what happens after a chase

Scooter Bros delivers personal vehicles. Nelson named the app directly to Famitsu. Requesting delivery helps you get back to your car when your character is far away. We cover the other GTA 6 phone apps in a separate article.

MikeShowSha also saw how a delivery worked. In his account, a driver brought the car, left it around the corner, got out and rode away on an electric scooter. Nelson explained that this was the person who had brought the car. That is an observation from the episode shown, not a guarantee that the service behaves the same way every time.

Getting a car back costs money. Nelson’s remarks as relayed by TGG include a specific condition: if you abandon your personal car during a chase and the police know it is yours, officers may remain nearby. You can then try to take it back from them. Wait too long and the car will be taken to an impound lot, making recovery more expensive unless you steal it back.

This system does not promise free insurance against every mishap. The sources describe delivery and impoundment but do not give complete recovery rules for a car that explodes or sinks. Registration alone also does not mean that a vehicle-based police search ends. Nelson separately explained that repainting a car may help when police are looking for it.

In An Extended Look, Lucia sets an abandoned car alight. This scene tells us nothing about the recovery rules for a destroyed personal car.

Your car also becomes a place for gear

A personal car is useful for more than driving. In an IGN interview, Nelson explained that its trunk gives access to purchased weapons and a change of clothes. You can request the car to reach your gear again or change outfits if the police already know what your character was wearing.

You can also use the trunk of a temporarily stolen car. Famitsu clarifies that long guns can be stored in any vehicle while it remains in the player’s possession. That does not turn it into permanent personal storage. TGG distinguishes a temporary car carrying stowed guns from an owned car with a selected weapon loadout.

Nelson also explained that weapons the character owns remain available through a personal car or Ammu-Nation’s weapon storage, even if a particular gun had to be discarded. In Mike’s preview, personally owned weapons persisted after an arrest, unlike weapons that had merely been picked up. We cover the detailed carrying and storage limits in our guide to GTA 6 weapons.

A June press description published by TheSixthAxis says all personal garages in Leonida include a gun locker and secure storage for stolen goods. The descriptions of the Shore Court and Paradise bonuses repeat these features. Buying an additional garage therefore provides both room for a collection and another place to prepare gear and store stolen goods.

Those stolen goods still have to be sold. Storing them does not mean they automatically become cash when you drive in. This is part of preparing for and earning money after robberies, not a confirmed source of passive garage income.

Shore Court and Paradise: the garages already named

Rockstar has described two specific properties alongside the game’s bonuses. The conditions for obtaining them should be kept separate from ordinary garage purchases on the map.

Shore CourtNear Ocean Beach‘55 Vapid Stanier Sedan and Vintage Vice City Pack: preorder or digital purchase by November 20, 2026
Paradise GarageWatson Bay‘67 Vapid Dominator Buggy and the Ultimate Edition add-on

The descriptions of both properties mention a gun locker and secure storage for stolen goods pending sale. Paradise is explicitly presented as a place for the Dominator Buggy. Rockstar did not specify the number of parking spaces in the descriptions we reviewed. One pictured or mentioned car is not enough to declare either garage strictly a single-car space.

Rockstar’s support article distinguishes the standard edition, the bonus pack and the Ultimate Edition Upgrade. A standard-edition preorder can also include the Vintage Vice City Pack, so Shore Court cannot be called an Ultimate-only perk. For digital editions, the support article extends the pack to purchases through November 20, 2026; physical-code terms need separate checking. The existence of two bonus garages does not mean ordinary garages can be bought only with an expensive edition.

Ultimate items also carry a general qualification: new items unlock across story chapters. A garage description does not promise access to all its contents in the opening scene. The exact chapter when Paradise unlocks and how bonus spaces interact with the early limit have yet to be stated.

What storage rules remain unknown?

As of October 19, 2026, the sources describe a clear sequence: find a suitable car, keep it in a garage if necessary, unlock the required options and pay to register it. You can then request the personal vehicle and use it to access your gear. But there is still no complete guide to garages and every exception.

Open questions include the final capacity of each property and the entire collection, buying cars from dealers or online, whether modifications and damage carry over when a car is returned, recovery of destroyed vehicles, and selling or transferring garages. The general storage rules for boats and aircraft are also unknown. Importing GTA Online insurance prices, menus and limits would be premature.
